Terminology

Every college has its own unique language. Here are key terms to help you understand the transfer process to a four-year institution:

Articulation Agreement/Transfer Agreement

A formal agreement between Gateway Technical College and four-year institutions that specifies the requirements for transfer students to gain admission, covering general admission and/or specific academic majors.

Bachelor’s Degree

A degree awarded by a college or university upon completion of at least 120 credits in a specific field. Often referred to as a “baccalaureate” or “undergraduate” degree.

College Grade Point Average (GPA)

This GPA is calculated using only college-level courses taken at Gateway Technical College, including all passing, failing, incomplete, and no-credit courses.

Course/Transfer Equivalency Guide

A tool available on many universities’ websites that shows how Gateway Technical College courses transfer into their programs. Not all institutions offer this guide.

Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)

A GPA calculation that includes all courses attempted at Gateway Technical College, covering all grades and attempts.

Double Major

This option allows students to graduate with two fields of study simultaneously, providing expertise in multiple academic areas.

General Education Requirements/General University Requirements

Courses across areas like social sciences, humanities, global diversity, communications, and sciences that must be completed as part of a bachelor’s degree.

Lower Division Classes

Introductory or general education classes typically taken in the first two years (100 & 200 level). These are freshman and sophomore courses, whereas upper division refers to junior and senior level classes.

Major

An area of academic concentration, such as business, social work, engineering or history, required for completing a bachelor’s degree and typically geared toward career preparation.

Major Prerequisites

Courses that need to be completed before admission into a specific major.

Major Read

Transfer students who complete associate degrees and relevant prerequisites to prepare for their intended major.

Minor

A secondary area of study with fewer required courses than a major. Minors are optional.

Official Transcript

A comprehensive record of all completed courses and GPA at Gateway Technical College, which must be submitted to four-year institutions during the admission process. Transcripts from other institutions attended are also required.

Pre-Major

Status for majors that require completion of prerequisites or specific department requirements before formal admission.

Quarter

A term of instruction, typically lasting 10-11 weeks, with an 8-week summer session.

Semester

A term approximately 15 weeks long, with typically two semesters (Fall and Spring) in an academic year. Some colleges and universities offer a Summer semester. 

Transferable Courses

Courses that are generally applicable toward graduation at a four-year institution and often parallel university courses.

Upper Division Classes

Courses typically completed in the junior and senior years, often focused on the student’s major area of study.
