Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Frequently Asked Questions

  1. As a DACA recipient, am I eligible to attend Gateway Technical College?

    YES, DACA students are eligible to attend Gateway Technical College.
     

  2. Am I eligible to receive in-state tuition? 

    The student must meet the standard residency requirements (resides in the state and demonstrates intent to do so permanently) to qualify for tuition.
     

  3. Am I eligible to apply for financial aid? 

    No, DACA students are not eligible for financial aid. 
     

  4. Am I eligible for work-study?

    No, DACA students are not eligible for work-study employment opportunities.
     

  5. Can I study abroad?

    Students need to be able to get a current passport and possibly a VISA (depending on the country). If they are unable to get a passport, they cannot study abroad. 
     

  6. Where can DACA recipients or other undocumented students find support on campus? 

    We have support services and resources available to assist all students.  If there are specific questions or concerns, students should be able to connect with any staff to get directed to the appropriate contact at the college.

    Students are welcome to connect with any staff member for support and to be directed to Josh Vollendorf or the Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights.

Undocumented Students Frequently Asked Questions 

1. I am an undocumented student looking to apply, how does the application process work?

We welcome all students to join us at Gateway! Students are welcome to meet with our New Student Specialists for assistance with the college application process or apply online. Our New Student Specialists offer weekly Get Ready Application Workshop and individual appointments. If a student prefers to apply and get started on their own, they are welcome to Gateway Technical College.

The admission steps are listed below.

  • Fill out an online application

  • Must meet one of the following multiple measures: earned a technical diploma or higher, earned a minimum high school GPA of 2.6, earned a minimum college GPA of 2.0 or submit ACT or Accuplacer test scores. Submit any needed transcripts or test scores

  • Some programs have additional admission requirements. Go to gtc.edu/requirements for details.


2. Am I eligible for financial aid at Gateway Technical College?

  • Gateway offers different payment options for students. While undocumented students are not eligible for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), there are scholarships that students can apply for through Gateway’s Foundation Office and external sources.

3. Will Gateway Technical College release my information to immigration authorities?

  • We will not release any information involuntarily without a lawful subpoena in place. 

  • The Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights does not consider immigration status, nor do they report any information to immigration authorities.

 

4. What is the protocol for campus police and security personnel interacting with undocumented students? 

  • We do not have campus police, only security.

  • Security do not make reports to immigration authorities and treat citizens and other situated individuals the same.

International Students – Frequently Asked Questions

The requirements for international student admissions are listed on the International Student Checklist on the Gateway Technical College International Student page.

1. What are the requirements for admission?

Federal regulations require international students to be enrolled in at least 12 credits (full course load) each academic semester.

2. How much is tuition to attend Gateway Technical College? How can I pay tuition?

International Students on a visa pay the out of state tuition rate. Information about tuition rates can be found at the tuition rates page.

3. Are there any scholarships or is financial aid available?

International students are not eligible for U.S. federal or state financial aid but are eligible for Gateway Foundation Scholarships.

4. What can I do if I haven’t achieved the required English proficiency scores?

International Students without the adequate English Proficiency Scores can gain admission by signing up for and completing the GTC Intensive English training program.

 

5How can I register for classes?

International Students that gain admissions to Gateway Technical College must attend an International Student orientation to update their International Student status documents, review compliance regulations, and receive guidance for class registration.

 

6. Are employment opportunities available for international students?

International students on F-1 student I can work only on campus (if a job is available) (Part-time).
